Here is an article that investigates a research study into a comparison between two training cycles. A standard control training group that trains pretty much the same each week, and a training group that pushes and adds huge volume to their training. Over a three week period, the over reaching group experiences increasing levels of fatigue and decreasing performance.
However the kicker is once both groups take a week of taper, the performance of the over-reaching group jumps way beyond the control group.
Words of caution: Over-reaching is desirable in certain training circumstances, with certain athletes, but it's not to be confused with over-training. Over-reaching is an acute response to training load that can be recovered from during a short taper or rest. Over-training is a chronic condition that affects the bodies ability to recovery or operate normally. It requires weeks or months to recover from.

Your Host: Peacock Family Cabin in Victoria Beach Manitoba...124km from Pan Am. (We fill all the beds, then move to filling the floor space, then move to tenting, and finally, if you're lucky and have a good friend or family in the neighbourhood, you might be able to find more accommodation for the weekend. It might not be luxury, but it's warm and dry and with friends, and free!).
