Tribe's lastest wedding

A ceremony was held last night at the workout to wed a rider (Kim) and her new bike. Michael presided over the services and all members who witnessed the event toasted the union with Gatorade. Here's what was said:
"Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here to celebrate the union of a rider and her new bike. As we all know it is a relationship that we should not enter into lightly because the hours we spend in the saddle often exceeds the time we spend with some members of our family. We travel together with our bikes, we take them on vacation. Together we see miles and miles of beautiful scenery. Some of our highest and most exhilarating moments are experienced on bikes, and inversely, some of our lowest moments too.
Like in all good relationships, the more time you spend together, the closer you feel to one another. You grow with one another and you change together, perhaps growing more alike. Certainly the bike will grow more handsome and dignified in time as he gets scratched up and abraded with use. And hopefully the rider will morphs into a steely, cycling machine.
If you commit to a bike - maintain it and respect it – the bike will return your love and reward you with rich experiences. It’s a sacred relationship that is worthy of exchanging vows, so...
Kim, Do you promise not to covet sexier time trial frames in transition? Do you promise to maintain the bike, clean and oil its chain, keep his derailleur’s in tune and learn how he works so that you can do basic repairs as necessary? Do you promise not to upgrade any of his stock parts in a bid to go faster when instead more smart training would probably do the trick? Will you endeavour to wear out the bike before you grow weary of his style and trade him in for a more fashionable and youthful model? (Kim answered, I do.)
Bike, Do you promise to make Kim faster and more agile? Will you forgive her when she rides you in the slush of Spring, the road grit that sprays up in the rain and the bleaching uv rays of a searing summer sun? Will you cushion the bone jarring and teeth chattering vibrations of roads in Manitoba? Do you promise not to be a searing pain in the neck, back and ass? (Bike answered, I do.)
I pronounce you ride and rider. You may straddle the bike."
The vows were sworn over a copy of Joe Fried's 'The Cyclists Training Bible' and a glass was stomped inside an IMC aid bag.
All this drama was deservedly inspired by Kim's love of her beautiful new ride.

Movie Night? 2009 Leadville 100 Mtn Bike Race!!

http://www.raceacrossthesky.com/

At 10,000+ feet, against the misty backdrop of a former mining town, Leadville, Colorado, 1228 cyclists line the starting line. For many, it will be the most difficult race of their lives. For some, a bragging right to say they raced alongside the best in the world. Some imagine victory. Most hope only to finish. But everyone will count. The race that started 25 years ago as a running race to drive tourism in Leadville has now grown to a lottery cap of 1000+ competitors, many of them the world's most elite cyclists. But the Leadville Trail 100 "Race Across the Sky" Mountain Bike Race is not just a race of man against man: it's man vs. man, man vs. self, man vs. elements, man vs. time. A clock set for 12 grueling hour's slugs through 100 miles, over 14,000 vertical feet of climbing, some two miles above sea level, through extreme climate changes ranging from heat to hail, from rain to snow. To the racers, the risks of injury, fatigue and mechanical failure pale next to the chance that they will fall behind the 12 hour cut off mark and be eliminated. Rivalries include six-time defending champion Dave Wiens vs. international star / seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Inspirational stories of human triumph include a Leadville woman rider who was critically injured by a car while training for last year's race, another who suffers from multiple sclerosis, and 45+ rider who has raced all 15 years. Whether they're international stars of the sport or everyday folks with the will to finish a race whose difficulty is on par with the Ironman, the grit to push to their own physical and emotional limits strikes an elegant symmetry between racer and environment and a struggling former mining town whose very existence now relies on the tourism generated by this race.

The movie is being shown Wed., January 27 at 7pm at both Silver City theatres.

Swim Videos

After all the work we put into our swimming, it's always nice to go just a little faster. Although we couldn't do a lot with our limited time during the winter camp, we certainly hope to be able to do a little more in the upcoming months. In the meantime, I came across some YouTube videos, that I thought were very good for developing the freestyle stroke. The videos are done by Dave Scott, former 6x Hawaii Ironman Champion.

Why Train?!!

Fundraiser January 26

Tribe member Carly Lodewyks is having great success in raising money for a cause that is close to her heart. She is hoping to raise $10,000 for the Lance Armstrong Live Strong Foundation.
Her ultimate goal is to compete in a triathlon in Orillia, Ont., in August in memory of her aunt, Marg-Rheta Wright, who died last year after being diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.
More immediately, she wants the community to know about an upcoming fundraiser to support her lung-bursting quest.
On Jan. 26, there will be an event at Tiber River Naturals, based at 3-1650 Kenaston Blvd., between 7 and 9 p.m.
Find out more about this inspiring story and Carly’s fundraising success in a front page story of The Lance, Community Newspaper.
